Stop Burning Cash
Google Ads is the most powerful bottom-of-funnel marketing tool ever created. It is also the fastest way to light thousands of dollars on fire if you don't configure it correctly.
1. Ignoring Negative Keywords
If you bid on "software development," your ad might show up for "free software development courses." You must aggressively build out negative keyword lists to exclude completely irrelevant, zero-intent search terms. Check your Search Terms report daily during launch.
2. Trusting Google's "Auto-Apply" Recommendations
Google's primary goal is to make Google money. Many of their auto-recommendations (like expanding to the display network on a search campaign) will result in wasted spend. Turn off auto-apply recommendations.
3. Broad Match Gone Wild
Using entirely broad match keywords without strict conversion tracking will drain your budget on vague searches. Rely heavily on Phrase Match and Exact Match until you have enough conversion data to let the algorithm run Broad.
4. Terrible Landing Pages
Sending paid traffic to your homepage is a cardinal sin. Send them to a dedicated, high-converting landing page that explicitly matches the exact intent of the keyword they searched.
